Sözcük sırası
Dolaylı sorularda normal sözcük sırası kullanılır, yani, özne fiilden önce gelir, ve 'do' veya 'did' kullanmak gerekli değildir:

Evet / hayır soruları
Bu tür bir soru 'ask' + 'if / whether' + cümlecik kullanılarak dolaylı hale getirilir:

Soru sözcükleri
Bu tür bir soru 'ask' (veya 'ask'a benzer bir fiil) + soru sözcüğü + cümlecik kullanılarak dolaylı hale getirilir. Cümlecik, normal sözcük sırasına sahip ve zaman kipi değiştirilmiş soruyu içerir.
