MEET THE FACULTY & STAFF

  • Antonia Melvin

    Antonia Melvin appreciates the IB program because it encourages students’ creative and critical thinking and their sense of determination in their learning. This is especially due to CAS, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. TOK has become her specialty throughout the last 12 years of her IB teaching. She has co-written a TOK book to prepare students for assessment and enjoys teaching TOK as much as she does coordinating it.

  • Barbara Garde

    Barbara Garde was born and raised in Zimbabwe, where she taught for 17 years. She did her BSc in Mathematics at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa and her PGCE at the University of Leicester in the UK. Since relocating to the UK, she has taught in many different types of schools, both state and independent.

  • Cy Webber

    Cy Webber completed a PGCE in Economics and Business Education at Warwick University and taught both subjects at a UK state school for two years. He then moved to Turin, Italy for nine years, where he taught at an IB World School. Apart from coordinating university guidance, he enjoys being involved in numerous projects in the school and leading the humanities faculty.

  • Dona Jones

    Dona Jones earned her BA (Hons) in Business Studies and her PGCSE at Sheffield Hallam University. Dona taught at a secondary school in Sheffield for six years before moving to an IB World School in Kuala Lumpur where she worked for four years before moving to Oxford for her role at EF Academy. During her time in Kuala Lumpur, Dona studied a Masters in Education, focusing on the iPad as a teaching tool.

  • Emma Clarke

    Emma Clarke was previously a teacher and Director of Studies with EF in Indonesia. Before leaving for Indonesia, Emma worked with street children and in a charity-run school in rural India as part of her first teaching experience.

  • Joan Willisoni

    Joan Wilisoni has been involved in international education and IB programs for over 25 years. She was previously the principal at the International School Nadi, an IB World School in Fiji. Joan has been an IB Coordinator, teacher and examiner, and a member of the IB Diploma five-year review committee for the Asia-Pacific region. She holds a diploma in Science Teaching and a BA in Education and Management from the University of the South Pacific.

  • Jonathan Newell

    Jonathan Newell has worked in higher education at Trinity College of Music, London, and was Director of College Music and Tutor at Brasenose College, the University of Oxford. He has been a member of the IB’s Diploma Examining Board, and the Chief Examiner for Music for the IB program, and regularly leads teacher-training workshops for the IB in Music and Extended Essays.

  • Luan Brothwood

    Luan Brothwood has many years of experience working in the private, public and charity sectors and her background is in youth and community work. She has had experience working with young adults in an education setting and is especially enjoying her experience within an international environment. Luan is very fond of her role as a Student Guidance Coordinator and values her time supporting students while they attend EF Academy Oxford.

  • Lobow Dabrowska

    Lubow Dabrowska-Szpakowicz graduated from Brest State University with a Master’s Degree in Education. She has extensive experience as a language instructor and has taught English, Russian and world literature in addition to working as a translator and interpreter in Poland and the UK and as the Head of the Foreign Languages Department at Printing Technical College in Warsaw.

  • Mark Zumbuhl

    Mark Zumbuhl was an undergraduate at Cambridge University and did an MPhil and PhD at Glasgow. He has worked mainly in higher education, including teaching and research fellowships at the University of Manchester and Trinity College Dublin. Mark worked for three years in undergraduate admissions at the University of Oxford and has experience in the university admissions process.

  • Michael Liggins

    Michael Liggins has worked in the education sector for over 20 years in a range of roles including teaching, management and consultancy. He has taught his subjects in further and higher education. Michael is a graduate of the University of Oxford, having completed his first degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He also completed a Master's Degree at the London School of Economics in Human Resource Management.

  • Morag Clarke

    Morag Clark earned an Honors Degree in Agriculture at Wye College, University of London. She completed further studies in Hotel Management and worked in health service and various colleges both at home and in Saudi Arabia. Morag retrained as a teacher through the Open University, and has taught biology in both Oxford and Berkshire. She also tutors students with dyslexia and currently combines teaching with wildlife conservation work.

  • Dr. Paul Ellis

    Dr. Paul Ellis is the Head of School of EF Academy Oxford. Previously, he was a Deputy Head at Stonyhurst College which he led to authorization as an IB World School, and a Head of Department at University College School, London. He was educated at University College London and has written for a variety of publications, been a recipient of Arts and Humanities Research Council funding, and was a Schoolteacher Fellow at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford.

  • Philip Randall

    Philip Randall is a fully qualified teacher with a Combined Honors Degree in English and History and a PGCE from Loughborough University. He has experience in various Special Education Needs contexts and English as a Foreign Language. He was an independent boarding and day Housemaster for 18 years and he has also hosted international students from the various language schools in Oxford.

THE CAMPUS

EF Academy’s boarding school in Oxford is a five-minute bike ride from the city’s center. The small and vibrant city has beautiful buildings and a large, diverse academic community dominated by the famous university.

Our British high school in Oxford is spread over two campuses that are a separated by a 3-minute walk down Pullens Lane, a one-lane road in a quiet residential neighborhood. Both parts of the school are characterized by traditional architecture and outdoor spaces where students meet to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner or to grab a coffee during their study break. The residence buildings and some classrooms are on one part of the campus, while the reception, dining hall, gym, library and more classrooms are on the other part. Beyond the campus, you will find shops, restaurants, cafes and cinemas, which offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of your host country.

ACCOMMODATION

We offer two accommodation options for students at our boarding school in Oxford: student residence and host family arrangement. Both offer students the comfort of home and the space they need to study and complete homework.

At EF Academy Oxford, students have a wide variety of activities and clubs to choose from. From special interest clubs like debate and film, to academic clubs including French and math, there is something for everyone. The activities coordinator also organizes regular trips to various museums and galleries in Oxford and London.
